Repair and renovate period brick, bungaroosh and flint walls.

I am a fully qualified and experienced builder/bricklayer who specialises in renovating old garden walls (with an NVQ2 in bricklaying, and a diploma in building studies). I have DBS (CRB check, for that piece of mind) work to a very high standard and have a vast knowledge of building methods and construction materials. I specialise in Bungaroosh walls (found mainly in Brighton and Hove in the mid-18th and mid- 19th century) along with flint walls. Bungaroosh and flint walls are not built the same way as modern brick walls and need to be repaired with the original materials. Unknown to many people bungaroosh walls often have a heritage preservation order on them and I am heritage craft trained. I focus on repairs and restoration of garden walls and period walls, eg Victorian/Edwardian, using all traditional materials. If a brick wall is old and built with lime, I can often use the original brick to maintain the original aesthetics of the wall, which is far cheaper and better than a replacement.

Costly re-building of a wall doesn’t have to be the option though. Neither does turning a blind eye, because it will get worse and eventually cost £1000s’. Before

Before, the Victorian flint and brick wall had been badly cracked by the substantial size tree on the customers land, it was leaning and also the flint wall needed repairing. The customer also wanted a similar colour brick to keep the wall authentic and marry-up with the house.

After

I repaired the flint wall using natural lime of that period and not cement, dismantled carefully the loose part of the wall and I managed to build the new wall around the tree to let it flourish, saving the customer numerous amounts of money, time and heartache of losing their tree. The wall was designed so it will not be damaged in the future by the growing tree and similar colour bricks were sourced.

Before

The Victorian wall was leaning, it needed a new capping layer, rotten and broken bricks and looked in a very bad state. The customer wanted to re-use the same bricks, to remain in-keeping with the Victorian house.

After

I renovated the wall keeping the authentic looks of the imperial size brick wall, I dismantled the wall, re-built it with the same bricks, using traditional and natural hydraulic lime. I also repointed it, replaced loose bricks and made a capping to go along the top.

Before

The Bungaroosh wall was leaning, due to the neighbouring garden being built up, and in need of re-pointing and a new capping.

After

Rather than replace the wall with a very expensive and out of character wall, I renovated the existing wall by repointing, repairing holes, repaired the capping layer on top and built brick piers to stop the wall leaning.

Before

This very old, flaky and loose wall was treated, reinforced then a sand and cement render was applied for a strong final finish.

After

The finished wall now rendered, it's looking good with defined sharp edges.
Before I rebuilt this wall, the client and I discussed removal of the old one and building a complete new wall but as you can see I was able to restore the original at a much lower cost. These images show what can be achieved if the process is done correctly even when there is little remaining of your existing wall.

Before the Bungaroosh wall was in a mess and a new wall was quoted for, however I managed to build it up to the level required by the owner.

After

I built the wall up to the original height with reclaimed brick and repointed the rest of the wall with traditional Natural lime mortar which added strength and saved on a new wall.:

The rendered/plastered Bungaroosh wall needed repairing, building up in parts and re-rendered/plastered.

After

The newly renovated wall which was built up on the right hand side and the rest repaired and rendered/plastered with traditional and natural Hydraulic lime the is flexible and breathable along with the Bungaroosh.

After

I repaired the Bungaroosh then rendered it, ready for painting.
